Lower Elementary FAQ for Fall 2020

What would a day for distance learning look like for a Lower Elementary student?

Lower Elementary will be using Zoom to conduct group or individual meetings.  Distance learning students will attend a one-hour long lesson on Zoom each morning Monday-Thursday. Break out rooms will be utilized for small groups over Zoom, and for the opportunity to meet one-on-one with teachers via scheduled meetings during normal school hours.  Students may choose when to complete their assignments but will have daily work to complete as the students in-class have. Each Friday there will be a drive-thru pick-up process to turn in assignments and to receive the next week’s work packet and materials. Monday and Tuesday afternoons students will have Writer’s Workshop lessons by level, each 30-45 minutes. Wednesday’s each level will have a reading group, about 30-40 minute sessions. Thursday afternoon will be for specials and Friday afternoon will be a whole class meeting for an hour. Any time that students are not scheduled to be on a Zoom session will be their independent work time.

What will the online program look like compared to the in-class curriculum? How much time will be online?

The online curriculum will try to mirror the in-class curriculum as much as possible.  Some alterations will be made to account for shared classroom resources that students may not have access to in their homes.  Students will have approximately 1-2 hours of expected Zoom meetings each day, depending on what lessons or discussions are happening that day.  The time they need to complete their assignments will vary by student.  They will submit their assignments on Friday’s at the scheduled drive-thru exchange.

How frequently will the distance learning groups gather via zoom or meet with teachers?

Lessons will be given Monday-Thursday via Zoom. Monday and Tuesday afternoons students would have Writer’s Workshop lessons by level, each 30-45 minutes. Wednesday’s each level would have a reading group, about 30-40 minute sessions. Thursday afternoon would be for specials. We will have a class meeting on Friday afternoons. There will be office hours open on Thursday afternoons for any student to join with questions or concerns. If a private meeting with the teacher is necessary we will schedule that separately.

Will at-home learners be able to stay on track for moving to the next level?

Provided students participate, do their assignments to the best of their ability, and seek out assistance from their teachers when needed, they should be on track to move to the next level for the following school year.  If there are concerns about this, teachers will contact parents, much as we would in a normal school year.

Will distance students be interacting with students in the classroom, for example, literature groups like last semester they did during zoom meetings?

At Lower Elementary (LE) this will not be possible as each LE class is its own cohort. Distance Learning will occur in the LEN classroom.
